My Writing
Please allow me to introduce my writing here in this space. I am the author of Mother of Honey, a memoir where I share the story of my indigenous Brazilian mother, a woman with an unbreakable spirit who defies the conventions of her time and fights against the injustices of imperialism, poverty, and the patriarchy.
Writing my mother’s story was a deeply healing experience for me. To my surprise, the story has touched many hearts so far, getting glowing 5-star reviews. A book club has been formed by some of the readers where they discuss my mother’s journey and focus on their own ancestral traumas.
Ever since I can remember, writing little poems and stories as a child, helped me soothe daunting emotions and experiences. Later in life, this channel opened to me again and I wrote songs, short stories, poems. The pain I felt at my mother’s inevitable departure, shaped The Mother of Honey.
I have been a climate activist even before climate change was in the news. Out of my eco sadness, I have been working on Samauma and the Sacred Tree an eco-novel that has so far won the Harper Collins/Spread the Word Competition, it has been short listed for the 2023 JOFFE Book Prize and has been granted a place in one of Curtis Brown’s prestigious courses. Samauma and the Sacred Tree has piqued the interest of Climate Spring who are intrigued by the story and asked me if I see it as an adaptation for film or TV. But who
touched my heart the most was the enthusiasm of Fabio Nascimento, a documentary photographer and filmmaker who has worked on YANUNI with Leonardo Di Caprio. Fabio shared that he is genuinely moved by Samauma and the Sacred tree and that he can absolutely envision it as a compelling visual narrative for screen.
This makes me feel there is a story here that is both a human and a global drama. It is also a beautiful and heart wrenching love story about two young activists from different corners of the world. I hope and pray that it will touch many hearts and bring awareness to the climate crisis we are in. I feel art can move us to change, to take action and to try and create a better world for our children, and all children.
You may say I am a dreamer, but I am not the only one.
